We went to the Apostle Islands last weekend. It's a nice drive, about 4 1/2 hours, so we drove up Friday and stayed in Ashland and drove back Sunday.
The south shore of Lake Superior is known for it's sea caves, which in the winter freeze over and become ice caves. In the summer you can't see the caves unless you take a boat, but in the winter the lake freezes solidly enough that you can walk to them, at least every few years. The walk was open last year for several weeks from January to March. This year they didn't open it until last Saturday (Feb 28) and will probably still close by mid-March as the ice begins to break up.
There are two kinds of ice to see there. The lake ice is very solid underfoot, with spectacular cracks and bubbles which formed as the ice froze. Much of that ice if quite clear, which can be unnerving to walk over. The ice that forms from the lake spray is also white, even though it isn't as clear. The other ice is from water coming off off and out of the sandstone along the lake. This ice tends to be filled with air bubbles and looks more like frozen foam. It also has included minerals so it can look brown or yellow. By the way, we had to buy ice cleats so that we could walk on the ice without sliding around and falling on our butts. Pretty expensive, but well worth it.
The hike starts after you find a parking spot. There are a couple of dozen spots in a parking lot at the beach, but there were over 7,500 people who went on Saturday. My GPS reports that we hiked about 2 miles before we ever got to the lakeshore, from where we parked along the road. We then hiked on the lake about 2 more miles as we looked at the different formations, then 4 miles back to the car. We were exhausted, and my wife got a nasty blister from her boots not fitting well enough (we're buying new boots before we do anything like that again!)
I took about 800 photos, and I'll have about 30-40 that I like well enough to show people. I've uploaded a few so far and will do a few more every now and then for a bit.
I hope you enjoy them!
